I don’t know about you, but I love making my own body care products.
Ever since I changed my dietary lifestyle to a plant based, Eco-friendly one,
I learned that what you put ON your skin (the outside) is just as important as what you eat (the inside).   To me, it was a real eye-opener! I look at everything I put on my skin and decide if it is something I would be willing to eat.  Why you ask?

Our skin is the LARGEST organ of the body.  What you put on it or come into contact with, the skin absorbs, assimilates and processes right into the bloodstream going full circle throughout the body.  Did you know that the commercial body care industry is one of the leading toxic industries in the WORLD? The very products that we shop our grocery stores and malls for consisting from hygiene, shampoo, soap, makeup, skin and body care are actually extremely toxic to our bodies in the way of carcinogens!  Synthetic chemicals, found in conventional body care products, are harmful to the human body and our planet.

There are over 10,000 chemicals used in personal care products including: carcinogens, reproductive toxins, endocrine disruptors, phthalates, nitrosamines, lead, heavy metals and formaldehydes. Parabens, used as preservatives in almost all products, are designed to kill cells and prevent growth of bacteria and fungi. Manufacturers may use almost anything as an ingredient and market products without the FDA’s approval. Some chemicals are allowed only at certain levels, but these levels accumulate from using many products containing chemicals. (source)

Many deodorants (even those that claim to be “all-natural”) contain aluminum and/or aluminum derivatives. Aluminum serves as an antiperspirant…which we do NOT want. We want to sweat!  It is a natural process that helps rid our body of toxins and very important for our lymphatic system – which a large part of it is in our armpits.  Don’t stop the sweating – it clogs the pores, staunches the lymph circulation and causes many imbalances in the body.  These chemicals have been linked to Alzheimer’s disease and a  host of other horrific health concerns. Parabens are in many deodorants which are also downright despicable.

Before attempting to make my own deodorant, I went out and bought natural deodorants but not ONE would help keep the “funk” away.  We all have our own body chemistry and mine can be strong at times when working up a sweat and working hard.  I don’t mind sweating, but I do mind smelling. Stress is also known to amp up the “funk” smell in ones body (FYI).

I know there are tons of DIY deodorant recipes out there and believe me, I’ve tried several of them.  Many formulas out there use a lot of baking soda which I found out the “fun” way (sarcasm) causes an itchy rash in my pits – it happened to Scott also.  Not pleasant and doesn’t look good when you’re out in public and scratching your pits.  So, I got to researching and found several recipes that I played around with and came up with one that works for Scott and I.

Benefits of ingredients:

Shea ButterUnrefined shea butter is high in vitamins A and E and is incredibly soothing for your skin.

Coconut OilRaw, unrefined coconut oil has wonderful antibacterial properties which is a perfect place for those pits. Coconut oil will liquify at 76 degrees; below that and it’s in a semi-solid state.   If you want, you can substitute almond oil.

Food Grade Diatomaceous EarthDiatomaceous earth is almost entirely silica, which is a crucial trace element needed by our bodies, and one in which many are deficient. By adding DE into your homemade deodorant, you are giving your sensitive skin a nice dose of DE (essentially, silica) which helps with sensitive areas of skin that might become rashy and it also helps to draw out toxins.

Bentonite clayBentonite, also referred to as Montmorillonite, is one of the most effective and powerful healing clays. Bentonite can be used externally as a clay poultice, mud pack or in the bath and, in skin care recipes. It has a very fine, velveteen feel and is odorless and non-staining.  A good quality Bentonite should be a grey/cream color and anything bordering “pure white” is suspect.

Arrowroot powderArrowroot not only helps to serve as a thickener in this deodorant, but it also has the power to help draw out toxins.

Essential oilsI like to use lavender, sweet orange, ylang ylang, geranium, grapefruit, lemongrass and just experiment with different combinations. Play around and see what oils work for you.

Ingredients:

2 TB. shea butter

3 TB. coconut oil

6 TB. Arrowroot powder

1 TB. Bentonite Clay

1 TB. Diatomaceous Earth

1 tsp. baking soda (optional) this small amount does not cause irritation with me

20 – 25 drops essential oil/s of choice ( I used a combination of lavender, sweet orange and honeysuckle in this one)

Directions:

  1. Soften the coconut oil and shea butter in a double-boiler on the stove top on LOW for a minute or so.  Turn off heat and let cool a moment.  Then add remaining ingredients and mix everything together until smooth.  I have a mini food processor and will whip it up in that sometimes.
  2. Store in a jar to set up and label it.  I keep all of these homemade goods in used and washed jelly jars or random mason jars I have sitting around.  You can find some great sizes at local thrift stores for pennies.
  3. The consistency of this deodorant is extremely spreadable. It will firm up in cooler temperatures/houses.  My house is warm right now so it is more soft paste-like.  I use my finger to dip out a SMALL amount (seriously…you really do not need much) and just rub it into my armpits.  Use too  much and you will probably mess up a shirt.

The key to this application is to apply lightly and rub it in or let it soak in.  Use too much and you’ll  be wasting product and will likely mess your shirt. – See more at: http://www.sustaincreateandflow.com/how-to-make-your-own-deodorant/#sthash.tqnQBcJl.dpuf

Keep it somewhere cool, or else it will melt. Apply as needed.

Mineralizing Tonic Herb Toothpaste

Pearl PowderPrimarily, the nutritional value of pearl is amino acids and calcium, and the percentage of calcium can range from 30 to 80% of a pearl’s composition.  Brushing teeth with pearl powder provides some great preventative benefits. First, calcium coats and is absorbed into the teeth through its pores which can minimize pain from cold or hot sensitivities, plus the pearl provides a white sheen that can give the teeth a whiter appearance and a smoother luster; essentially, making the teeth look healthier and younger. Second, pearl powder heals the gums and makes them resistant to bacteria that can cause gingivitis; it can also help texturize the gums so they are not thin as well as prolong, and possibly prevent, receding gum lines.

Camu Camuis one of the best super foods for preventing gum disease. This amazing super food provides our bodies with endless benefits. It is the food with the highest amount of vitamin C in the world, and it also contains bioflavonoids. Studies show that a low immune system is one of the main reasons for unhealthy gums…and camu camu boosts the immune system like no other food.

Ingredients:

1/3 cup Bentonite clay or Diatomaceous Earth (or half and half of each)

2 TB. hot water

1 TB. coconut oil

pinch of pink himalayan salt or quality sea salt

7 capsules Pearl Powder – broken open

1 tsp. Camu Camu

1 TB. or so Baking soda

10 drops of peppermint oil (wintergreen is nice too)

5 drops liquid stevia – I use NuNaturals (or use 1 TB. raw honey)

Directions:

  1. Combine all ingredients and mix into a paste.  Add more water as needed for desired consistency.  Tweak flavor to your liking.
  2. Store in small container – remember those re-usable glass jars and label.

Almond Lucuma Maca Tonic Milk + Maca Product Review

Almond Lucuma Maca Tonic Milk + Maca Product Review

Maca Product Review

photo Maca_zpsd5c53896.jpg I have to admit, I have a superfood crush.  Well actually, I have several, but this little cutie is a part of my daily dietary intake for many good reasons. I have tried many Maca’s over the years.  The Maca that I have been purchasing and using recently just wasn’t cutting it anymore. I normally use the gelatinized version of Maca because it is easier to digest.   The potency, taste and texture had changed.  I wasn’t getting the same results that I used to.  So, that sent me on a search for a new Maca product.  I was looking for QUALITY, reasonaby priced, organic, sustainably farmed and 100% GMO free.  I found THE MACA TEAM.  I contacted the company with some extra questions and I was fortunate to receive some samples of Maca from them.  I got a box containing the organic raw red maca and raw black maca.  I was excited and a little hesitant.  Why was I hesitant? Well, I have a sensitive digestive system and my experience with most raw Maca left me gassy and bloated.  Not pretty, right!?

I have tested these two items honestly and proficiently with many recipes to make sure.  Guess what?  It’s THE ONE!  My crush is back for The Maca Team – Maca!  They have far surpassed any of the other Maca’s I have used in the past.  The smell is not overwhelming.  It is quite pleasant and aromatic.  The taste is fresh and smooth. The Maca Team – Maca is harvested one time per year – between June and August.  They only sell Maca from the current year’s harvest.  Because they order in smaller lots, their Maca powder is continually made fresh.  The proof is there.  OK, so my #1 win for this Maca was the raw version DID NOT upset my stomach.  You read it!  I tried it so many different ways just to be sure and no discomfort, bloating, gas, pains or the like.   Just positive results. Therefore, I just HAD to share this great find with you.  Woo Hoo!  They have an amazing array of raw and gelatinized products – red, black, and blend in powder and capsules.  I am super happy with the red and black raw versions.  I will try out the gelatinized version once these are gone.

If you sign up for their email notifications (Exclusive News, Updates, Deals, & More!), you will receive a 10% off coupon for your first order.

Just a few good reasons why you should choose The Maca Team… they were mine:

  • Fairtrade
  • 100% Non-GMO
  • 100% Organic
  • Premium quality
  • Excellent customer service and support
  • Great price

So what’s all the hype about this ancient Peruvian root?  It has been hailed as a superfood for numerous reasons.  Well, look at some of the facts:

  • Increased energy
  • Athletic endurance
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Fertility
  • Regulating hormones
  • Reduces anxiety and stress
  • Improves circulation
  • Mental clarity and focus
  • Clear skin
  • Stronger teeth and bones
  • Muscle gain
  • Over 20 fatty acids
  • 20 essential amino acids
  • Numerous minerals and vitamins
  • Helps with hormonal balance…the list of benefits goes on!

Nutrition Profile

  • Maca is rich in quality carbs, which, combined with its alkaloids and other nutrients make it a great choice for sustained energy
  • Maca is loaded with bio-available plant protein that is easy for the body to assimilate
  • Maca contains relatively high levels of cellulose and lignan, both of which stimulate intestinal function.  Fiber is a key component to a healthy digestive and elimination system.
  • Maca contains 17 amino acids. These drive many cellular functions in the body including sexual and fertility functions.
  • 20 different free fatty acids have been found in Maca.  They work to support cellular function. The most abundant fatty acids adding to Maca’s nutritional value are linolenic acid, palmitic acid, oleic acid and steric acid.
  • Maca has vitamins: B1 (helps the body convert carbohydrates into energy.  Essential for good heart, muscle and nervous system function.) B2 (important for body grown and red blood cell production), C (supports anit-oxidant activity), Niacin (supports healthy circulation)
  • Maca has minerals:
    • Calcium—maca contains higher levels of calcium than milk.  Calcium is crucial in bone development as well as for nerve and circulatory system health.
    • Phosphorus—important for the hemostasis of calcium as well as for transmitting electrical stimuli for brain and muscle action.
    • Magnesium—essential for the synthesis of protein and for muscle and nerve activity.   Crucial for heart health.
    • Potassium—works within the cells to help maintain healthy osmosis.
    • Sodium—along with potassium can support positive circulation
    • Copper—supports enzyme health.
    • Zinc—helps in clarity of thought and mental function
    • Manganese—supports healthy growth
    • Iron—vital component of hemoglobin.  Supports health muscle growth.
    • Selenium—protects cells against free radicals.
    • Boron—supports proper metabolism.

Maca has been a blessing in my diet for several years now.  It has been a boon to increasing energy, replenishing my body with nutrients when needed, balancing hormones (it’s an adaptogen that works for men and women alike), helped physical endurance with outdoor work and more.  I can tell a difference when I don’t take it.  It is therefore my daily comrade.

Disclaimer:  I tried samples of this product, provided by the company at no cost to me.  Opinions found in this post are mine and were not influenced by The Maca Team. They are honest and true.  I was so impressed with the product that I became an affiliate seller. Should you choose to click on a link connecting to The Maca Team site and make a purchase, I would get a referral fee for the sale. Thank you!

How do you incorporate Maca powder into your diet!? I add it to my morning smoothies, oatmeal, soups, dips, homemade dressings, etc.  Check out my Happy Hormone Tonic, Vegan Chocolate Superfood Protein Smoothie, and Tonic Superfood Smoothie.

Try out this creamy, healthy tonic milk below.  This milk is made with organic raw Red Maca and Lucuma powder – both of which are potent Peruvian foods that are full of nutrients and fuel the body on a cellular level.

Lucuma Powder is made from whole Peruvian lucuma fruit that has been dried at low temperatures and milled into a fine powder. This low-glycemic sweetener contains many nutrients including beta-carotene, iron, zinc, vitamin B3, calcium and protein. Yellow lucuma powder has a unique, maple-like taste that’s a delight in a variety of recipes.  The lucuma fruit is naturally sweet, but low on the Glycemic Index, making it a healthy choice for individuals seeking to decrease their sugar consumption.

Astragalus IV: Anti-Aging Potential Tonic Herb

Astragalus IV: Anti-Aging Potential Tonic Herb

Astragalus IV: Anti-Aging Potential Tonic Herb

Displaying Live Long.jpg

The wonderful folks at Imperial Wisdom know their business when it comes to researching, acquiring quality herbs and creating a powerful tonic blend that will take your health and wellness to a whole new level.  If you are a “tonic herb” geek like me, then you will love this information.  Take some time and peruse this amazing research that Marcus Schneider, creator of Imperial Wisdom, has shared with me to share with YOU!

Don’t just go by what you’ve heard about a tonic herb such as  “It’s great stuff, take it.”  Go deeper and discover WHY.  Why is this herb good for you?  What are the health qualities that deem this herb special?  What are the ancient and scientific studies boasting these claims?  These are questions I ask myself when I come across a tonic herb that I am interested in.  I don’t just read one article, I read many.  I get intimate with the herb.  Finding out as much about it as possible so that I can make my own informed decision about it.  Therefore, today I offer you some well researched and proven information about one of my favorite tonic herbs that I take daily.

Displaying Astragalus-IV.jpg

Astragalus IV Studied
for its Anti-Aging Potential

A little-known compound found in certain species of shrubs has scientists fascinated: could it be the fountain of youth that humanity has been longing to find for millenia?

Astragaloside IV : An Anti-Aging Miracle?

Astragaloside IV is a saponin extracted from the root of Astralagus membranaceus.  Recent studies have shown that Astragaloside IV may have a strong anti-aging potential by preserving telomere integrity and actively destroying free radicals that lead to cell damage.1,2  Telomeres are protective structures on the end of each chromosome. Recent research has found that the length of telomeres influences the aging process and likely play a role in age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s Disease, osteoporosis and cancer.3   Cells multiply by replicating their DNA to form new cells.  When the DNA strands split to create copies of themselves, the process damages the genetic material a little every time and the strands can eventually be pulled apart, leading to all kinds of dysfunctional cells. Telomeres cap the ends of DNA strands to help prevent them from being pulled apart but over time, telomeres shorten as a result of normal DNA replication and oxidative damage, preventing them from effectively playing their role of protecting DNA integrity.4

To counter this effect, our bodies naturally have a telomere-preserving enzyme called telomerase.  Its role is to regenerate telomeres as they shorten in order to maintain their protective effect against cell degeneration. However, most cells lack sufficient telomerase to counteract the effects of free radicals and oxidative stress and thus telomeres are gradually destroyed. This leads to the common signs of aging — disease, reduced tissue regeneration and loss of tissue function.  Stress can greatly accelerate this process.1

Not only does telomerase activation prevent age-related cell and tissue degeneration, studies have also found that it helps reverse it.4  This is huge — if we could find a way to scientifically create a powerful telomerase activator, telomeres would never get short enough to allow cell replication and oxidation to damage the cell’s DNA.  With perfectly undamaged DNA, we could  potentially extend our lifespan by a significant amount.  As we know, aging is related to the degeneration of cells and tissue that can no longer perform their function adequately. If increasing telomerase activity allows the regeneration of dying or damaged cells, we could very well see the beginning of a new era in terms of regenerative medicine.  Recent studies are showing that we may be on the right track with Astragaloside IV.

What Science Has Discovered About Astragaloside IV

Breakthrough research has indicated that Astragaloside IV counteracts cell aging by activating telomerase, thus increasing the rate of telomere regeneration.  A study reported that 40% of subjects showed an increase in mean telomere length after one year of taking an Astragaloside IV supplement.  Furthermore, telomerase seems to act primarily on the shortest telomeres.  This is significant because the shortest telomeres are usually the ones that become dysfunctional. Increased telomerase activity could therefore contribute to maintaining a minimal telomere length in order to prevent tissue degeneration.1  A brand-new study has also been able to prove that Astragaloside IV has enough telomerase activation power to restore a more youthful cell profile by reducing the overall amount of cells with very short or damaged telomeres.4

Displaying Anti-Aging.jpg
Another study examined the relationship between Astragaloside IV and free radical damage to determine its potential use as a treatment for multiple sclerosis.  This study found that Astragaloside had a strong antioxidant action by neutralizing free radicals and increasing the levels of antioxidant enzymes.6  Free radicals are unstable molecules that are formed when atoms containing weak bonds are split, often during normal metabolism or as a result of stress.  Because of their unstable nature, free radicals seek to bond with electrons from surrounding molecules, creating more free radicals. This process is called oxidation.  Eventually, this leads to the disruption of normal biological processes and accelerates cell aging by destroying telomeres.  Antioxidants are stable compounds that neutralize free radicals by scavenging unstable molecules and freely offering an electron to stabilize them, effectively ending the free radical creation chain.7

These studies suggest that Astragaloside IV has a dual action in telomere preservation.  On one hand, its telomerase activating properties help lengthen the shortest telomeres on each chromosome, preventing them from becoming too short and dysfunctional. Furthermore, its oxidation-fighting action contributes to the prevention of free radical damage to telomeres and other cell components.  Because telomere length is thought to be a major factor in the prevention of cell degeneration associated with aging, research surrounding Astragaloside IV as an anti-aging compound seems very promising.

Astragaloside IV and Disease Prevention

Many age-related diseases are directly related to the loss of telomere integrity and free radical damage.  For example, multiple sclerosis and dementia (Alzheimer’s disease) are the result of nerve and tissue destruction.  Cancer is caused by the rapid replication of abnormal cells, which are probably created from oxidation damage.  Hepatitis, cirrhosis and liver failure are also linked to the loss of normal tissue function. Astragaloside IV plays a role in the prevention of these diseases and many other conditions by contributing to the preservation of cell integrity on a microscopic level.  Studies are currently being conducted on this potentially powerful age-fighting compound in order to reduce the effects of aging on humans.  With more research, could it be possible that humans will soon find a way to preserve their physical and mental capacities for an extra few decades?

Looking and Feeling 25 Forever?

A clinical experiment on mice revealed that activating telomerase appeared to make the subjects age backwards, repairing their tissues and even regenerating neurons.8  Neurons are key components of the nervous system and are the only cells in the body that do not naturally replicate — we are born with a set number of neurons.  As they get damaged, they eventually die and do not get replaced.  In another experiment, scientists discovered that a topical gel enriched with Astragalus IV helped with collagen formation, wound healing and dramatically improved the appearance of scars.9  Since wrinkles and aging skin come from the loss of collagen throughout the years, could it be possible that we have potentially discovered a way to look youthful and have the sharp memory of a young adult well into our advanced decades? This is what scientists are currently attempting to find out.

Despite the many questions that remain, one thing is certain: Astragaloside IV has great scientific and medical potential. Many studies already account for its extraordinary effects on human health, and the future will eventually reveal if we have finally found the cure against aging.

Imperial Wisdom Tonic Herbal recipes

 photo mintymacaimperialtonicsrecipe1_zps13b146f0.jpg

I want to share some wonderful herbal tonic recipes with you today from my friend, Marcus Schneider from Imperial Tonics. I have shared with you before about this amazing superfood herbal tonic blend called Imperial Tonic Superfood (Tonic smoothie included) that I have been using since last Summer.  It’s a potent blend and has you covered on all bases.  As I have mentioned in the past, tonic herbs are not a quick fix.  Tonic herbs are by definition herbs that safely promote ones health and healthy aging through regular consumption.  That’s where these healthy smoothies and tonic drinks come into play so easily in our daily diet.  I like having a blend on hand that utilizes my favorite tonic herbs so when I am in a hurry, I can just add to other ingredients, blend, pour into a glass and savor.

“Tonic herbs are defined as “herbs that promote a long, healthy, vibrant, happy life, without side effects, even when taken over a long period of time.  Essentially, the tonic herbs are wonderful, healthful “super-foods” which benefit our well being in ways that more common foods cannot. They have a protective, balancing, vitalizing quality beyond that of any other herbs. They are generally consumed as a supplement to a well balanced healthy diet for the purpose of completing our nutritional needs and enhancing our nutritional profile.   The tonics are used to promote over-all well being, to enhance the body’s energy, and to regulate the bodily and psychic functioning, to protect the body and mind so as to create what the Chinese call “radiant health.” (source)

So, what is in this tonic blend you might ask?  I know you are.  Let me give you details, for it is what I love to do.  Research, educate and share.  This blend consists of some of the most powerful tonic herbs for longevity and overall well-being.

Here is what’s in Ancient Wisdom Tonic Superfood and why it’s so good for you:

Astralagus IV Extract

  • An excellent immune booster, thought to slow down the aging process, could play an important role in treating cancer, and normalize disturbances in the body.

Duanwood Reishi Spores

  • Improves how we handle stress, promotes balance, supports digestion which therefore stimulates our immune system and boosts energy levels. Duanwood Reishi is more potent and beneficial to conventional Reishi mushrooms. Reishi is my FAVORITE tonic herb!

Schizandra Extract

  • Decreases fatigue, enhances physical performance and reduces stress levels.  Helps with concentration and even offers liver and kidney protecting benefits.

Goji Berry Extract

  • Strengthens the immune system, increases vitality, reduces irritability.  It’s a nutritional powerhouse and super antioxidant loaded with vitamin C, minerals such as calcium, zinc, and selenium, and iron.

He Shou Wu Extract

  • An effective blood tonic to support healthy aging, healthy muscles, tendons and bones.  It builds essence, builds blood, and enhances fertility for men and women alike.

Detox Beet Tonic Salad

Detox Beet Tonic Salad

Beet Tonic Salad for Healthy Liver and Lymphatic Cleansing

 photo beettonic1_zps9ac31178.jpg

As the temperature warms up, liver energy is activated in the Spring, which becomes the perfect time to nourish and cleanse a toxic or overloaded liver. Liver congestion leads to lethargy since this amazing organ can become overwhelmed with how much it needs to process. It is a work horse!  When natural cleansing processes slow down, toxic substances start to accumulate in the bloodstream. Lifestyle choices such as experiencing too much stress, anxiety or anger, emotional purging, exposure to chemicals, drinking alcohol, taking medications, eating too many fried, processed or otherwise inflammatory foods, or not getting enough physical activity can all contribute to a liver that becomes sluggish and congested.

Let’s look at a healing vegetable that is a comrade to our liver, gallblader, lymphatic system and more.

In comes our friend, the BEET.  During my 14 day at-home Colorado Cleanse/Detox last month, I was encouraged to eat one beet a day (spread out through all 3 meals).  This simple little beet tonic salad became one of my favorite dishes.  It tastes wonderful and does so much for those organs needing support and cleansing.  Try eating one fresh beet a day for the next 3 months to help thin the bile and flush the liver and gallbladder. Beets are best grated raw with lemon juice, but also have benefits when eaten cooked or roasted.  It is the raw beet that packs the REAL punch.

According to Dr. John Douillard, Ayurvedic physician: “When the bile flows, the digestive system can break down fat and neutralize digestive acids and the liver can remove toxic fat soluble chemicals. Optimal bile flow may be the most important piece of the digestive puzzle when it comes to weight loss – so eat your beets and reap all the benefits!”

NOTE:  Now, keep in mind when you are eating beets, your poop will be red.  So don’t look down in the toilet and freak out.  You’re OK!  It’s those beets working through you.  It’s all good. ☺

Some top reasons to eat Beets:

  1. Fight Inflammation.  Beets are a unique source of betaine, a nutrient that helps protects cells, proteins, and enzymes from environmental stress. It’s also known to help fight inflammation, protect internal organs, improve vascular risk factors, enhance performance, and likely help prevent numerous chronic diseases.
  2. Anti-Cancer Properties.  The powerful phytonutrients that give beets their deep crimson color may help to ward off cancer. Research has shown that beetroot extract reduced multi-organ tumor formations in various animal models when administered in drinking water, for instance, while beetroot extract is also being studied for use in treating human pancreatic, breast, and prostate cancers.
  3. Rich in Valuable Nutrients and Fiber.  Beets are high in immune-boosting vitamin C, fiber, and essential minerals like potassium (essential for healthy nerve and muscle function) and manganese (which is good for your bones, liver, kidneys, and pancreas). Beets also contain the B vitamin folate, which helps reduce the risk of birth defects.
  4. Detoxification Support.  The betalin pigments in beets support your body’s Phase 2 detoxification process, which is when broken down toxins are bound to other molecules so they can be excreted from your body. Traditionally, beets are valued for their support in detoxification and helping to purify your blood and your liver.

Don’t throw those beet greens away!  If you do, you are doing yourself a dis-service.  They are among the healthiest part of the plant.  Beet greens actually have even more iron than spinach as well as a higher nutritional value overall than the beetroot itself.  Sautee them with some coconut oil, natural salt and fresh ground black pepper – YUM!  Chop and add them to your soups, stews and I even add them to my morning smoothies. I try to encourage rotating greens in your daily smoothies to ensure a diverse nutrient profile for your body.

Ginger root

Ayurveda gives ginger the status of a virtual medicine chest. That’s because this wonder spice has time-tested, digestion-friendly properties, in addition to its numerous other health benefits. In India, ginger is liberally used in daily life.  Read more about its healing benefits HERE.

Lemon

There are many health benefits of lemons that have been known for centuries. The two biggest are lemons’ strong antibacterial, antiviral, and immune-boosting powers and their use as a weight loss aid because lemon juice is a digestive aid and liver cleanser. Lemons contain many substances–notably citric acid, calcium, magnesium, vitamin C, bioflavonoids, pectin, and limonene–that promote immunity and fight infection.

 Mustard Seeds

Mustard seeds are high in antioxidants and are nutrient dense with selenium, which is known to have anti-inflammatory properties.  One teaspoon of white mustard seed, which is the kind used for the yellow condiment, is packed with 87.1mg of omega-3 fatty acids, 84.2mg of omega-6 fatty acids, 22.2mg of potassium, 27.3mg of phosphorous, 9.7mg of magnesium and 16.9 mg of calcium. These high amounts of body beneficial substances in the seeds when consumed encourage the body to speed up metabolism, lower blood pressure and prevent atherosclerosis.  Mustard seeds have antiseptic as well as anti-fungal properties. This makes them very useful for purging the digestive system and increasing the body’s natural defense system. (source)

Thoughtful Thursday

♥ The Crossroads of Should and Must – This is a long read, but so well worth it!

♥ 3 Yoga Poses for a Daily Detox -  These are great poses to do everyday – I do!

♥ Why You Should Never Eat Tilapia - Yikes!  This information applies for any “farm raised” fish.  Always read your information label. If it says “farm raised” put it down.  Look for wild caught.

♥ Do Not Top Off – Ayurvedic wit and wisdom from HeyMonicaB.  Love this woman!

♥ Grain Free Blender Brownies – These were amazing!  One of the best black bean brownies I’ve come across with the healthiest ingredients.  I used Grade B Maple Syrup in place of the raw honey.  Full of protein without any of the guilt.  We loved them!

♥  RECIPE: Maple Dandelion Chips – This is BRILLIANT!  I am going out in the yard, harvesting and making these little crunchies tonight.  Thanks Kate!

♥ Is Your Food Emotionally Charged? – Wonderful insight to the deeper side of how food, emotions and more effect us overall.  I always suggest in my cooking classes to be in this awareness of our emotions and feelings when preparing and cutting up food.  Our energy goes into it at this point in the beginning and can effect the finished product.  We are such complex and beautifully designed beings.

♥ Cutting cords of attachment from the people that hold you back – Well said, Clare!

♥ What is the Quintessential Herb for the Female Reproductive System? – This is a potent female herb that I use in some of my tonic blends.  I love it!

♥ Ayurveda – Cycles of Shedding -  Cultivating the energy of Spring cleaning allows us to let go and release in so many ways in our lives, relationships, emotions, thoughts and more.  Cleanse away, babes!

♥ Top 10 Weight Loss Tips - Reset Your Fat Burners. These tips were the major factors and protocol in the Colorado Cleanse Detox that I did last month with great success.  #6 was new to me and I will give it a go at my lunch time meals from now on.  I love Dr. John Douillard!  I have been following his advice for quite some time now with pleasant results. I feel so much more grounded, balanced, and whole with incorporating Ayurveda and his practical/medical knowledge into my lifestyle.  Look into it if you haven’t already.  It just might change your life and health.

♥ Vedic Astrology April 2014 – Great insight!

 It’s here!

The Blender Girl: Super-Easy, Super-Healthy Meals, Snacks, Desserts, and Drinks–100 Gluten-Free, Vegan Recipes! Cookbook!

I received my copy of my dear friend, Tess Master’s AMAZING cookbook last week. I spent several hours upon opening this beautiful book immersing myself in all the vast knowledge that Tess so easily shares.  And the recipes!  Oh, my goodness.  Be still my beating heart.  (Southern Belle over here fanning herself with delight).

If you don’t know Tess, she is a woman you want to check out and get to know.  She has the wildly popular blog – Healthy Blender Recipes.  Tess came into my life several years ago when I started visiting her blog consistently for blender recipes.  I started communicating with her – sharing my feedback, gratitude and appreciation for her and the recipes.  We had much in common and became online friends.  She helped me get started with my blog and has been so supportive, encouraging and inspiring in all areas of my life.  She is the “real deal”.  I look forward to meeting her in person someday. She’s down to earth, funny, smart, witty and can she whip up some breath taking meals in her kitchen that she so graciously shares on her website Healthy Blender Recipes. (go visit)

Tess offers easy plant-based recipes that anyone can whip up fast in a blender.  Her newly released cookbook offers 100 whole food recipes that are gluten-free and vegan, and rely on natural flavors and sweeteners.  Many of the recipes are raw and nut, soy, corn and sugar free.  Of course, in a blender cookbook there are fabulous smoothie, soups and spread offerings, yet also include appetizers, salads, and main dishes with a blended component in the versatile collection.  One of the things that I adore about this book is that Tess encourages and guides you that these recipes can easily be adjusted to your personal taste: Add a little extra of this,  leave it out, an extra squeeze of that, etc.  These recipes are so flexible and forgiving.  You are guided to find your own inner “blender babe”.

Let me take on a brief tour of some the recipes you will find in this beautifully photographed cookbook:

I have been making the Perfect protein power smoothie from the cookbook every day for about 5 days now.  We have been working outside a lot and I appreciate a healthy, plant-based protein smoothie to assist in recuperating and healing the body.  This recipe delivers and packs a punch to those muscles and I feel great upon drinking it. Tess graciously gave me permission to share this decadent and powerful smoothie with you all today.

Perfect Protein Power Smoothie
Serves 2
This blendsation tastes like ice cream and is a protein powerhouse containing spinach, almond butter, and hemp seeds. Pears pair beautifully with the earthiness of the other ingredients, and ginger wakes up the party. If your pears are really sweet, you could leave out the date. Note that the ginger mellows as the smoothie sits. So, if you are not a fan of its flavor, let the blend chill in the fridge for a half hour.
