Afternoon Delight Herbal Tonic

Afternoon Delight Herbal Tonic

Energy Enhancing Immune Boosting Herbal Tonic

The weather outside this week has been cold, dreary and snowy.   I whipped this tonic up on Wednesday afternoon to warm me up, boost my energy (cabin fever going on here!) and enhance my immune system.  Our immune systems are so delicate and easily influenced by many external AND internal factors.  Daily strengthening of this system is key to radiant health.  This tonic lends not just to “physical” health but to “mental” health.  I have been doing a lot of work on the computer lately and needed some L-dopamine boosting.  What is she talking about, you ask?  L-dopamine has to do with mental focus and can also help with depression, SADS (seasonal affective disorder) – AKA winter depression, winter blues or “I can’t get outside and GROUND, soak up the sun and be with nature.”

L-Dopa is an amino acid which is a precursor to dopamine.  Dopamine is a neurotransmitter manufactured by certain neurons in the brain. Dopamine neurons are triggered by good feelings.  In short, dopamine makes you feel good. Since dopamine itself can not cross the blood-brain barrier, it is delivered in a precursor state – a form which causes the brain to produce dopamine. L-Dopa is just such a precursor. L-Dopa has been found to be effective in alleviating depression, increasing focus and in treating Parkinson’s Disease. One of the best natural sources of L-dopa is Mucuna Pruriens.

Mucuna is an herb (a bean actually) that grows wild in many parts of the world and is reputed in Indian medicine for its therapeutic properties. It is more of a traditional medicine that has still to find its place among modern medicines however it has proven itself valuable and effective in many parts of the world. It has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic, African and Caribbean medicine. (source)  It is recommended to take it as needed.  A few days on, a few days off.  One week on, one week off.  See how it works for your body and adjust.  I add it to my tonics when I am focusing on a project (writing), doing a smoothie class or socially interacting – as needed.

Other Mucuna Pruriens Benefits:

  • Improved mood and feeling of well-being
  • Mental clarity
  • Better sleep
  • Anabolic: increased lean muscle mass, decreased fat
  • Increases bone density, helps reverse osteoporosis
  • Smoother skin
  • Stronger immune system
  • Helps regenerate organs
  • Healthier cholesterol profile
  • (source)

The best quality Macuna I have found and use myself is from Hyperion Herbs.  You can get it here.  Great results!

There are other superstar herbs in this tonic blend – but overall they synergize to balance and enhance one another to warrant you one HEALTHY, powerful, grounding drink.

Maca is a wonderful hormone balancer.  It is important to remember that MACA does not itself contain any hormones, but its action on the body jolts the pituitary gland into producing the precursor hormones which ultimately end up raising estrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels, as well as helping to balance the adrenal glands, the thyroid and the pancreas. This occurs naturally while increasing energy. (sourceI take Maca daily to keep those hormones in check.  I usually increase the dosage a bit during “that time of the month” and it makes life (and Scott’s life) more enjoyable.

Reishi Mushroom   This prized fungus may be able to boost your immune system, fight cancer, ward off heart disease, calm your nerves and relieve both allergies and inflammation.   According to Eastern thought, the body needs to defend itself against threats to its “equilibrium.” These threats can be physical, such as viruses and bacteria that cause infection; emotional, such as stressors that cause anxiety; or energetic, in that they reduce alertness. Whatever the threat, reishi helps the body maintain its defense against these threats to its equilibrium, helping the body to maintain balance. In this sense, diseases like heart disease and cancer mean that the body is out of balance, which is why an equilibrium-enhancing remedy such as reishi can help so many diverse ailments.  Read more here for some astounding proof of this mushroom. (sourceI take Reishi daily.

King of cacao – Raw chocolateCacao is increasingly being consumed for its nutritive and health enhancing properties as it has been in many cultures for thousands of years.  If you feel exceptionally good when eating it, you can thank the “bliss” chemical anandamine along with theobromine and phenylethylamine for boosting your mood. Pure cacao powder also contains a good dose of magnesium, which plays an important role in maintaining a healthy heart.

Dandy Blend is so versatile that, depending on how much powder you use, it can be everything from a pleasant, nutty roasted tea to a rich, strong espresso. It also is the easiest way to get the benefits of dandelion root into your diet.   Dandelion root aids the liver.  Add one spoonful in a cup of hot or cold liquid, stir, and it is ready to drink. It makes a particularly good iced coffee for use in warm water.  Rich, smooth full-bodied coffee flavor, but no caffeine, acidity or bitterness.  I LOVE this stuff!  It’s also great to add to raw ice creams, puddings, pies, hot chocolate drinks, etc. for a coffee-like taste with NONE of the coffee side-effects.

Cordyceps is one of the oldest Chinese remedies to boost the immune system, fight disease and fatigue, promote more energy, and induce vitality!  This herb increases the natural killer cells in your body that help to treat, protect, and prevent harmful activity in the body- whether it be from sickness, disease, stress, free radicals, or other environmental pollutants.  The polysaccharide content is also a key factor in not only the strengthening of the immune system, but also the powerful anti-oxidant properties, which in turn, help to slow oxidation and aging of the body. Cordyceps is highly effective in attacking the pathogens that take harmful action on your immune system.  It is a leading herb for its energy supplementation, with no contradictions like those you would get with herbs like ginseng.  Cordyceps is used as an energy tonic, for sustainable and lasting natural energy, without affecting the heart, as it is used in some cases to nurture and treat the heart.  This is truly indicative of cordyceps amazing adaptogenic qualities, making it one of the safest and most effective herbs on the planet, providing absolutely no side effects, as it is naturally non-toxic. (source)  Cordyceps is part of my daily tonic intake also.

Hemp seeds make a tonic super creamy and pack it full of nutrition.  One of the most nutritious and easily digested foods on the earth is the hemp seed. Hemp seeds contain all of the following: protein, essential amino acids, and essential fatty acids. Hemp is truly a food that can sustain all of man’s dietary needs.

  • Hemp contains more of the beneficial amino acids than proteins such as milk, eggs or meat.   Hemp is a complete source of protein and is easily digestible.    Hemp seed contains almost seven times more omega-3 fatty acids than fish. It also provides an option for those unable to eat gluten, meat, sugar and milk. It is a good addition to a diet for those concerned about avoiding carbohydrates. (source)   Try my Vanilla Cacao Hemp Seed Milk.

This herbal tonic tastes and looks like a mocha cappuccino.  This is just a sneak peak of the tonic recipes that I am creating for you for the Tonic eBook.  You will have such amazing recipes to fuel your body, mind and spirit to a whole new level. I am so excited to be able to share it with you.

Tonic recipe:

(serves 1)

Double the recipe for two people – which is what I did (Scott loves these tonics also).   Or make a double batch – one serving in a.m. and one later mid-afternoon, if need be. (I just keep the extra in a small thermos to keep warm for hours when I am ready for it).

Directions:

Heat your liquid in a small saucepan on the stove (NOT THE MICROWAVE please).  While liquid base is heating (warm/hot, never boil – so keep an eye on it),  add all the other ingredients into a high powered blender (I use a Vitamix).  Once your liquid base is warm/hot, add it to your blender, fit lid on tightly and blend for about 20 – 30 seconds till smooth and creamy.  Taste and adjust flavors.

( * Tip: The reason the liquid is best warm/hot for this tonic drink is that it synergizes all the herbs to work more efficiently.  Best taken on an empty stomach.)

Longevity Energy Tonic

It’s TONIC time!  I have been creating a lot of new tonic recipes and wanted to share this one with you.  The other recipes I am saving for my TONIC ebook that I am working on.  It will be full of indepth information about tonic and longevity herbs, where to purchase them (top quality for BEST price), recipes and much more.  I am passionate about tonics and their benefits and it is due time to share all this acquired knowledge and share with you how to make your own.

What do think!?  Would you be interested in this book?   I would love your input, feedback and comments.

Herbal tonics are used to promote over-all well being, to enhance the body’s energy, and to regulate the bodily and psychic functioning, to protect the body and mind so as to create what the Chinese call “radiant health”.

In the meantime, let’s take a brief look at the ingredient list for this tonic and its benefits for you.  (*Click on the name and see where I purchase mine).

Hemp seeds - Hemp seeds offer raw nutrition, rich nutty flavor and a tender crunch.  Hemp seeds contain more protein and omegas than a similar serving of Chia or Flax.  These seeds make a great alternative to milk – hemp milk.  They lend a creamy texture when blended with water.

Dandy BlendThe Easiest Way to Get Dandelion (Good for your liver) in Your DietRich, smooth full-bodied coffee flavor, but no caffeine, acidity or bitterness. May provide increased energy – use with discretion before bedtime.

Raw Cacao PowderKing of cacao – Raw chocolate.  Cacao is increasingly being consumed for its nutritive and health enhancing properties as it has been in many cultures for thousands of years.  If you feel exceptionally good when eating it, you can thank the “bliss” chemical anandamine along with theobromine and phenylethylamine for boosting your mood. Pure cacao powder also contains a good dose of magnesium, which plays an important role in maintaining a healthy heart.

Gynostemma Extract powderGynostemma is a sweet and slightly bitter herb. The list of benefits of this “magic grass” as it’s called are amazing. It has a strong anti-fatigue affect, strengthens the mind, increases vigor, improves digestion, eases pain, strengthens the immune system, fights off pathogens and helps reduce inflammation.  An adaptogenic herb, this means It helps to calm the system when overactive and stimulate when under active or depressed.

Maca (Gelatinized) - The maca root has potent adaptogenic properties helping each body differently based on individual needs. Maca is most often regarded as a powerful stamina booster, libido enhancer, hormone regulator and exhaustion buster. Unique alkaloids found in maca, called Macainas, have been shown to nourish and support the endocrine system, which regulates many of the body’s important functions. Maca also provides an abundance of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and sterols that can support general health and immune function.

Astragalus Root powderAstragalus herb is thought to boost overall vitality. In Chinese medicine it has been historically used to promote healing and reduce fatigue.

TriphalaTriphala is recommended and used more than any other Ayurvedic herbal formulation. Popular for its unique ability to gently cleanse and detoxify the system while simultaneously replenishing and nourishing it, this traditional formula supports the proper functions of the digestive, circulatory, respiratory and genitourinary systems. Translated as “three fruits”, it is composed of the dried fruits of amalaki, bibhitaki and haritaki. Containing five of the six tastes (all but salty), Triphala readily removes excess vata, pitta and kapha from the body, bringing balance and proper functioning to the system. It is commonly taken as a daily supplement to help maintain balance of the doshas.

Organic Ghee Ghee is essentially clarified butter, which means it has had the milk solids and water removed.  Ghee helps with digestion, prevents inflammation, promotes intelligence and memory and lubricates the body’s connective tissues, promoting flexibility. Modern Western medicine has found that ghee resists free radical damage, and that it contains phenolic antioxidants that are known help strengthen the immune system. Ghee is also lactose-free and contains no salt.

Chaga mushroom ( I used as a tea base for this recipe) -  Chaga mushroom can be used as a remedy for chronic inflammation, diabetes, hypertension, cancers, stomach illnesses and improving the immune system.

Ayurvedic VATA Superfood Smoothie

Ayurvedic VATA Superfood Smoothie

Vata’s Superfood Smoothie

 photo vatasmoothie_zps32ab96a7.jpg

If you don’t know already, I LOVE my green smoothies!  Ever since I started drinking them warm/hot (HOT Green smoothie), I can have them during the winter with GREAT results. I was craving something yesterday during the afternoon and was being aware of what my body was wanting.  I was craving GREENS!  I needed something that was going to feed my body, cells, tissues with amazing nutrition, filling for my tummy and tasted fantastic.  I had a new ayurveda superfood smoothie recipe and knew it was time to try it out.   I adapted this lovely VATA smoothie recipe from Cate Stillman at Yogahealer.

Scott was out in his workshop (putting the final touches on the small kitchen island he made for me, so that I can face everyone for my upcoming cooking class. Plus it might be the new layout for the videos from now on – MORE kitchen centered with better lighting – Yay!).

  photo kitchenisland1_zps207e5ca1.jpg

 photo kitchenisland2_zpsb8b1501a.jpg

Can I just say that SCOTT IS THE BEST!  If we want or need something and he can make it, he will.  He is so creative and brilliant at coming up with a design and putting it all together AND it looks great!

OK, back to story here.  I was feeling depleted and knew that I needed something quick so that my body could utilize the nutrients immediately and digest easily.  Enter the VATA Superfood Smoothie!  I made one for myself and it was fantastic.  I loved the color, but I also loved the thicker texture and taste.  Scott stepped inside the house to ask me a question about the time I finished scraping the last residue out of the glass.  I offered to  make him one – rarely does he turn down a smoothie or ANYTHING that I offer for him to taste – he said “YES, Please!”   A few minutes later, he’s drinking his smoothie and making YUM, HHHMMM, THIS IS GOOD noises.  We have a winner!

Vata’s Superfood smoothie

SERVES 1 person

  • 1.5 cups water
  • 1 banana or 1 cup mango – I used a banana
  • 1 TB. Maca powder
  • 1 TB. chia seeds
  • 1 heaping TB. goji berries
  • 1/2 tsp. Spirulina
  • 3 dates
  • 1 cup or more leafy greens ( I used organic spinach)
  • 1 + tsp. extra virgin coconut oil
  • 1/2 tsp. wheatgrass powder (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp. Reishi powder or 1 opened capsule Spirit Reishi
  • 1 tsp. Ashwaganda powder
  • a few drops of stevia – if desired for more sweetness

Put all ingredients in a high speed blender - I use a Vitamixand blend till smooth and warm. If you want to try some other fruits for VATA, check out the post I shared with you on Ayurvedic Dietary Guidelines.

This smoothie was so filling and nourishing.  I felt so much better and I had plenty of energy after drinking it. I felt like Popeye after “eating me spinach”.  I drank it around 2:30 in the afternoon and wasn’t hungry till dinner.  THAT says something for me.  When Scott came in for dinner, I asked him how the smoothie worked for him – sustaining wise.  He said that he was surprised at how filling it was and he wasn’t hungry for hours also.  It is a meal replacement all by itself.  I will definitely be making this smoothie quite often.  I can see kale being a great green in this smoothie.  See, I’m already fantasizing about having it again with optional variations.   Yes, I am a nutrition foodie geek and PROUD OF IT!  :)

Hope you give it a try and enjoy it as much as Scott and I did!

I will post Pitta and Kapha Superfood smoothie recipes later in the week.

Happy Hormone Tonic

Happy Hormone Tonic

Kibby’s Happy Hormone Tonic

Photobucket

If you read my post from yesterday How I Am Balancing My Hormones – Naturally (if not, go do so, please), You’ll see why I concocted this tonic.   Let me tell you, it is FANTASTIC and has become one of my favorites.  The taste is a bit different – it is rich, spicy, creamy, with a mocha butterscotch taste.  It’s really hard to describe all that is going on with it, but my taste buds DANCE to it.  In turn, my hormones are happy!!  Hence the name!  :)

Hormone imbalance can occur at any age (20′s and up) – men and women.  Let me shed a little light on an Ayurvedic herb that I have been taking for about a month now.  It is called Triphala.  Literally meaning “three fruits”, Triphala is a traditional Ayurvedic herbal formulation consisting of three fruits native to the Indian subcontinent: Amalaki, Bibhitaki and Haritaki.  Triphala contains five of the six tastes recognized in Ayurveda (sweet, sour, bitter, pungent and astringent), only missing the salty taste.  Because of its high nutritional value, Triphala uniquely cleanses and detoxifies at the deepest organic levels without depleting the body’s reserves.

  • Amalaki (emblica officinalis), commonly known as Indian gooseberry or amla, is considered one of the best rejuvenating herbs in Ayurveda. It’s a strong natural antioxidant containing 20 times more vitamin C than orange juice. In India, amalaki is known as the “nurse herb” because it supports the liver,  strengthens the immune system and cools the body, balancing the Pitta dosha.
  • Haritaki (terminalia chebula) has the strongest laxative powers of the three fruits contained in triphala. In Tibet, haritaki is so highly revered that in their sacred paintings, it’s often depicted in the extended palm of the medicine Buddha. Is known for its “scraping” effect, which removes toxins and helps maintain healthy levels of weight.   The herb also has astringent properties and balances Vata.
  • Bibhitaki (terminalia belerica) is an excellent rejuvenative with both laxative and astringent properties. It eliminates excess mucous in the body, balancing the Kapha dosha. In addition, bibhitaki is a powerful treatment for a variety of lung conditions, including bronchitis and asthma. (source)

(source)

Ashwagandha, also known as Withania somnifera, is an herbal remedy that may be effective in treating your hormone imbalance. According to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, ashwagandha is a popular Ayurvedic herb used to help treat stress, fatigue, pain and diabetes. Ashwagandha, a member of the nightshade family, has also been used to help restore your hormone balance, increase your energy and improve your health and longevity. The root of the plant is used medicinally. Ashwagandha has a bitter and earthy taste. Tilgner says that ashwagandha is an adaptogen that is best suited to individuals whose hormone levels are altered due to stress or chronic agitation. (source)

Shilajit contains 85+ minerals in ionic form, Vitamins, Fulvic acid and very important phytonutrients. The fulvic acid in shilajit is in it’s most natural and purest form. Fulvic acid is required to dilate the cell walls and transport the minerals deep into the cells. No amount of mineral supplements will be of any use unless they are transported into the cells. Minerals also act as catalysts in the assimilation of vitamins. Insufficient supply of minerals will also mean Vitamin deficiency. Fulvic acid alone can transport the minerals through the thick cell walls. Shilajit has 85+ minerals apart from fulvic acid and can instantly supply them to the cells. It can effectively prolong cell life and keep it healthy for a very long time. No wonder the Indian Yogis called it as Amrita or The Elixir Of Life.  Here are some other benefits:

Liver function Enhancing, Cholesterol & Blood pressure reducing properties : It is a very effective liver tonic. It literally helps rebuild liver tissues. It has been proved to reduce cholesterol levels, serum tryglycerides and serum phospholipids in liver. By maintaining the liver functions, It helps body perform various functions attributed to liver like digestion metabolism etc at an optimum level. It contains Poly Unsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFA). This lowers blood cholesterol levels.  Thus it effectively reduces cholesterol levels both in liver and blood. Fulvic acid is known to reduce sodium levels in the blood thereby contributing to a reduction in blood pressure. (sourceRead more about it here and  here.   Shilajit is truly a SUPERFOOD.

Healing Tonics

Hot chocolate Healing tonic

I’ve been going back to my old ways lately.  Nope!  Not what you think!  I have been going back to my old herbal knowledge ways.  I actually have a degree in herbalism from The School of Natural Healing from Dr. John Christopher.   It is a wonderful program!  Shortly after completing the program (in 1998 ?), I opened up a small herb shop in town for about a year.  I was ahead of my time and the application for the town.  I had some regulars and people interested in holistic health, but not enough to keep it open. So,  I closed shop and moved onto other pursuits, but never forgot the knowledge I learned and its usage.  I have been re-applying a lot of info. about herbs back into my diet, but in a different way.  Instead of taking capsules of herbs and supplements, I’m making tonics and teas to get the most benefit from them and popping some into my smoothies.  BAM!  It’s working!

Tonics are safe and enjoyable to take on a regular basis to promote the strength, immunity, and energy you need to feel better and stay healthier day after day.  Whether you are feeling stressed or low in energy, wish to boost your mental clarity or increase your stamina, want to ease digestive discomfort or support heart health,  tonics are an all-natural drink (cold or hot)  to meet your individual needs. Nurture your own well-being with easy-to-make recipes.

All superfoods fall into a tonic herb category.  Superfoods are foods that you can eat whole with herbal qualities.  They are very therapeutic.  Tonic herbs usually have superfood qualities, but can’t eat the whole food – you have to make an extract out of it.

Your herb choices are quite expansive! My personal favorites right now are nettle root, oatstraw, pau d’arco, astragulus root, he shou wu, horsetail, gynostemma, goji berries, camu camu, shizandra berries, gynostemma, yerba mate, Maca, lucuma, Shilajit and medicinal mushrooms (such as reishi & chaga).  Don’t be intimidated by all of these if you haven’t made teas like this before, just start with even 3 herbs and you’re on your way to stellar health!

I used to take supplements, pills, etc., however, I rely on tonic herb teas, smoothies, Superfoods and the food I eat for all my nutrition now.  I feel the difference and my body responds well to it.

My TOP Herbs/ Superfoods for Tonics:

*Astragalus

The herb of youth and sustained energy is astragalus root.

http://christianbates.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/health.jpg

It has been used in China for thousands of years as a whole body supertonic, that strengthens muscle and improves metabolic functions.  Astragalus extracts are immuno-modulating, rich in stress-reducing adaptogenic compounds that help regenerate cell function and healing.  It greatly relieves fatigue and is used by athletes all around the world for peak performance.  Since astragalus is a supertonic herb, it can be used daily and safely with cumulative youthening benefits over a long lifetime.  (source)

*Reishi Mushroom

This prized fungus may be able to boost your immune system, fight cancer, ward off heart disease, calm your nerves and relieve both allergies and inflammation. (source)

**Spirit Reishi- This is the best product that I have come across so far!

Spirit Reishi - Red Ganoderma Lucidum Extract

It is amazing and I noticed results within days of use.It is not cheap, but I only use one capsule (broken open) into my tonic per day.  You definitely get what you pay for on this one!  I highly recommend it!  I have tried several other Reishi brands and the quality just WAS NOT there.  I had to use 3 to 4 capsules and really didn’t notice anything.  With Spirit Reishi, I feel energized, focused, alive, HAPPY, and balanced yet calm, grounded and revitalized.  This will last a long time for the $ put into it.  It is THE ONE HERB I use consistently among all of them.  It is very bitter and doesn’t require much in your tonic drink or it will be strong and off-tasting.

* Maca

Many herbalists recommend maca as an adaptogen. This means its natural properties work through the adrenal glands to cause adjustments in the body. An adaptogen has the ability to increase your body’s resistance to infection, fatigue, stress and trauma. Maca is believed to behave as a restorative and tonic and to help rebuild weak immune systems and improve your body’s absorption of nutrients. It is believed to do so by supporting endocrine health. The endocrine system is the combination of glands that produce hormones. Hormones are released into the blood stream and act as “messengers” to the tissues and organs. Scientists believe that maca helps regulate hormones, contributing to regulated metabolism, elevated energy levels and an overall feeling of wellbeing. (source)  I like to use this Maca.

* Gymostemma

This is just like ginseng in effect, but from a leaf. It’s been studied almost as much as green tea, but it has no caffeine and has lots more adaptogenic effects.  I love it as a morning or evening tea.  This tonic is carefully crafted to enhance your longevity, adaptability and thrivability.  Throughout Asia, Gynostemma teas are consumed as a daily tea by health conscious folks.  It is commonly used as an adaptability-enhancing anti-aging herb.    It can be consumed in the morning to help you get started for the day.  It can also be drunk at night to help you relax.  One tea bag = 3 cups of tea.

* Chaga Mushroom

The “King of Mushrooms” is rich in antioxidants, polysaccarides and a host of other substances including melanin to support beauty and immune system robustness. Russia has done countless studies on chaga, proving it to be one of the most important herbs ever used.  Tips For Buying Chaga Mushrooms – very important – READ!  I order my chaga mushroom in bulk (1 pound) and make a tea of it periodically.  A little goes a long way and can be re-used several times to get the most out of it.    I purchase from  fiddleheadheaven.ca.  Dwight Thornton (owner) is a wonderfully friendly, helpful man who knows how to harvest his product responsibly and sustainably.  He wants to protect this important natural resource! He sells chaga in its purest form.  That’s what I want!  (Free land shipping & handling with tracking number, within North America.) *Tip:  After I have made several batches from the 3 TB., I will mix the remains in my dog’s food bowls for medicinal benefits for them – perfectly safe.

* Yerba Mate

In South America, yerba mate has been revered for centuries as the “drink of the gods” and is enjoyed daily for vitality, clarity and well-being. The leaves of the yerba mate tree provide 24 vitamins and minerals, 15 amino acids, abundant antioxidants and naturally occurring caffeine. Grown and harvested deep within the rainforest, Yerba Mate has a smooth, rich flavor.  Yerba mate is also known for its adaptogen-like qualities, which include reducing the effects of occasional stress.  I like this tea best in the morning.  The tea bags are great for convenience, but I prefer the loose tea because you can utilize more of the medicinal components from it this way and you get more bang for your buck ($).

Yerba Mate Tea – Guayaki (tea bags) or Yerba Mate Tea  – Guayaki (Loose tea)

* Dandy Blend, Instant Herbal Beverage with Dandelion

Just amazing taste and medicinal benefits (win-win to me!)

* Hemp seeds

How-To Make A Super Tonic Herb Tea

Bring a few cups of spring water to an almost rolling boil with your chosen herbs in your pot (I highly recommend using glass or a high quality stainless steel – DO NOT USE CHEAP ALUMINUM OR THE LIKE – it will leach into your tea and is BAD for you), turn the heat down and let it simmer for a minimum of 20 minutes. Depending on what roots and herbs you are using, you may need or want to simmer them for longer to extract even more phyto-nutrients. You can also just turn the heat off with the lid on and allow the herbs to steep this way as well.  I’ll sometimes do this at night before going to bed and let steep overnight.  When I get up, the tea is nice and ready (strong) and can be diluted somewhat.  This way I can get more use out of the quantity made up.  Strain well.  Bottle any un-used amount in a glass Mason Jar or larger glass container.  If you want a warm/hot tea, just warm the amount you need for tonic on the stove and it’s ready to go for recipe.

I place my specialty herbs and superfoods, etc. such a Spirit Reishi (break open 1 capsule), Astragalus powder, carob/cacao powder, pinch of salt, sweetener of choice (raw honey, stevia, maple syrup, pitted date) etc. in high powered blender (I use a Vitamix) first, then add the warmed tea or hot water and blend on HIGH till smooth and creamy.  Taste.  Adjust flavors and pour into a glass or mug.  Sip and think positive thoughts about how the tonic is healing you with its medicinal qualities.  That you are worth it and deserve ONLY THE BEST!  That you feed and nourish your body with only THE BEST!

Every step you take that is positive towards better health for yourself opens you to more wonderful possibilities to come your way.  I LOVE nourishing myself with healthy foods, positive thoughts, healing techniques and modalities that assist me in bringing out the BEST POSSIBLE “Me” and to let that light shine outward.

Kale Lovers! – Brad’s RAW chips Review – OMG!!

Kale Lovers! – Brad’s RAW chips Review – OMG!!

Attention KALE Lovers!  This post is for you!!!

If there is one food that I love as much as avocados, it’s KALE!  It’s a SUPER, DUPER NUTRITIONAL POWER HOUSE!!

I mean, look at these stats! :

Kale is a nutritional standout in three basic areas: (1) antioxidant and anti-inflammatory nutrients, (2) much-needed micro nutrients (in which the average U.S. adult is currently deficient), and (3) cancer-preventive nutrients called glucosinolates.

Kale and its Cancer-Preventing Phytonutrients

Kale’s special mix of cancer-preventing glucosinolates has been the hottest area of research on this cruciferous vegetable. Kale is an especially rich source of glucosinolates, and once kale is eaten and digested, these glucosinolates can be converted by the body into cancer preventive compounds. Some of this conversion process can also take place in the food itself, prior to consumption.

Also worth noting in kale’s nutritional profile is its vitamin K content. Kale contains nearly twice the amount of vitamin K as most of its fellow cruciferous vegetables.

In addition to the above-cited nutrients, according to our Food Rating System, kale is an excellent source of vitamin A (in the form of carotenoids), vitamin C, vitamin K, and manganese. It is a very good source of copper, tryptophan, calcium, vitamin B6, and potassium; and a good source of iron, magnesium, vitamin E, vitamin B2, protein, vitamin B1, folate, phosphorous, and vitamin B3. (source)   The benefits go on and on and It tastes wonderful too!

I love kale in my smoothies, juices, massaged kale salad, in raw breads/crackers, SOUPS (oh, yeah!) and my FAVORITE way to indulge in this gorgeous leafy green is KALE CHIPS!  Just set me up with a bowl of kale chips and don’t try to reach over and have one – MINE! :)  I do have to say that I make a mean, scrumptious, Out-of-this-world kale chip in my dehydrator that Scott and I (even the dogs LOVE them) are cuckoo for!

However, there’s a product out on the market that is pretty darn close, if not spot on with what I make.  Let me introduce to you (If you haven’t already tried them and are addicted to their yumminess) – BRAD’S RAW LEAFY KALE AND RAW CHIPS.  These products are ABSOLUTELY AMAZING and DELICIOUS!  If you can’t make your own and want some quality leafy kale chips – this is the one to buy!  No doubt!

I’ve tried several other kale chips on the market and they were OK, but nothing that I would ever purchase again.  The other day I was at Harry’s Whole Food Market in Marietta, GA and Brad’s Raw Chips had a kiosk set up handing out samples.  I met the lovely and friendly, Lauren Daitch, from Brad’s Raw Chips and she was gracious enough to provide me with some samples to try out.

Photobucket

Of course, first and foremost, I read the ingredient label to see what was in them and if they met my standards – and boy, howdy, did they!! They were in close conjunction to my own ingredients!   I have seen these chips over the years and NEVER tried them.  When I opened the packages, the smell was stimulating and had me salivating immediately (ALL OF THEM!)  Fresh, crispy and PERFECT!  Made with whole foods!

Brad's Raw Leafy Kale starts out with the most nutritionally dense leafy vegetable available--kale! Brad's Raw Chips are made entirely from sprouted flax seeds, groats and a variety of vegetables and spices!

Here’s what I tried:

 Photobucket

  • Raw Leafy Kale (Vampire Killer) – made with Kale, Red Bell Pepper, Cashews, Sunflower seeds, lemon juice, scallions, nutritional yeast, garlic, himalayan sea salt.   (These were AMAZING!)
  • Raw Leafy Kale (Naked) – made with Kale, Red Bell Pepper, Cashews, Sunflower seeds, lemon juice, garlic, himalayan sea salt.   (I don’t know, these might be MY favorites!)
  • Raw Leafy Kale (Nasty Hot!)  – That’s what it’s called!:) – made with Kale, Red Bell Pepper, Cashews, Sunflower seeds, lemon juice, jalapeno, nutritional yeast, himalayan sea salt and cayenne pepper. (SHAZAAAM!  These were awesome too!)
Photobucket

Leafy kale – fresh, crisp and nutritionally delicious!!

Next I tried the chips:  (Not fried, not baked, gluten-free, vegan, high in fiber)

  • Hot Red Bell Pepper – made with carrots, red bell peppers, flax seeds, sprouted buckwheat groats, jalapeno peppers, scallions, paprika, extra virgin olive oil, garlic, and himalayan sea salt.
  • Red Bell Pepper – made with carrots, red bell peppers, flax seeds, sprouted buckwheat groats, scallions, paprika, extra virgin olive oil, garlic, and himalayan sea salt.
  • Cheddar – made with carrots, red bell peppers, nutritional yeast, flax seeds, sprouted buckwheat groats, scallions, cayenne pepper, extra virgin olive oil, garlic, and himalayan sea salt.
  • Kale – made with carrots, kale, flax seeds, sprouted buckwheat groats, scallions, orange juice, Bragg Apple cider vinegar, extra virgin olive oil, garlic, and himalayan sea salt.
  • Beet – made with carrots, beets, flax seeds, sprouted buckwheat groats,  scallions, extra virgin olive oil, garlic, and himalayan sea salt.
  • Sun dried Tomato – made with carrots, flax seeds, sprouted buckwheat groats, tomatoes, scallions, sun dried tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, garlic, and himalayan sea salt.

Verdict: EVERY SINGLE ONE FABULOUS!  Loved the complexity of flavor, great sturdiness of chip while dipping into zucchini hummus, guacamole, and salsa yet light and thin.  Very filling and nutritionally dense.  A 3 oz. bag went a lot further than I thought.  I could only eat a handful and felt satisfied.

Photobucket

These chips are a “Meal in a Bag”.  Loaded with omega-3′s, live enzymes (dehydrated below 115 degrees), lean protein, comlplex carbs, vital minerals, vitamins, nutrients & fiber.  The bag consists of a complex, nutritionally dense food group!  I’m all on board!

The man behind the chips

Brad Gruno, that is.  Typical American guy – overweight, high cholesterol, low energy, didn’t sleep well.  Sound familiar?  Then something remarkable happened.  After moving back to Bucks County, PA, he decided to go on a predominantly raw food diet.  He lost 40 pounds, dropped his cholesterol to a healthy level, and recovered his lost energy.  He learned a lot about the benefits of raw foods and wanted something, as Brad says, “to put some crunch” into his diet.  With creative experimentation and encouragement from friends and family, a remarkable snack food was born - Brad’s Raw Chips.

Brad’s raw chips are dehydrated below 115 degrees, not baked or fried, and retain healthy, active enzymes and nutrients which aid digestion.  Only locally grown vegetables, herbs and seeds are used.  The raw chips are gluten-free and contain NO preservatives, binders, or chemicals.   Now, that’s my kind of ingredients and quality in a product!!

I have to be honest and say that I will probably still make my own leafy kale chips.   However, if I am ever out and about and want some kale chips – BRAD”S RAW Leafy Kale and RAW Chips will be the ONLY ones that I will buy, knowing how FABULOUS they are in taste and quality of ingredients.  Congratulations Brad!  You’ve got a new convert!

(*I was under NO obligation to give a positive review, just an honest one.*) – That’s what I did!

**Have you ever had these chips before?  What are your thoughts about them?**

Healthy GREEN smoothie soup recipe – My Breakfast for ENDURANCE!

Healthy GREEN smoothie soup recipe – My Breakfast for ENDURANCE!

Superfood Smoothie for Lasting Energy

Photobucket

This smoothie “soup” has become my tried and true favorite for breakfast on days that Scott and I have to go out and do landscaping work for customers (or ourselves).  I was on an “Acai bowl” kick for awhile there, but those acai packets can get expensive when consuming frequently.  I ALWAYS LOVE my GREENS daily, so I wanted to do something similar with the thickness and texture of the acai bowl, but have my GREENS too.

Playing around with smoothie ingredients is so much FUN for me.  I know, I’m weird, but I love it!  It challenges the creative side in me and helps me break out of the box.  If you don’t step outside of the box, you won’t know what wonderment is waiting for you or to discover.  Some of the smoothies I prepare in the morning for our breakfast are thinner and don’t stay with us as long.  Then, we are having to stop in mid-work to re-fuel to keep going.     I wanted thick, creamy, cold, delicious, nutritious and hydrating all at once.  I got it! – and we have been enjoying the results so far.  I can go HOURS on this smoothie and not be hungry yet have tons of energy and endurance to tackle anything during the day.

If you don’t have some of the ingredients, it’s OK.  Substitute with what you do have or play around with your own variations.    I’ll give you the recipe I use (and I even change it up with what I have) and then some substitutions for a few ingredients (just to keep the same texture, etc.).  Here we go!

Ingredients:  (serves 2 Large bowls)

  • Organic Kale leaves – 2 or 3
  • Dried Figs – big handful (cut off dried stems)
  • 2 or 3 frozen bananas
  • vanilla extract
  • pinch of sea salt
  • Maca – 1 TB.
  • Coconut water or filtered water – 1 cup
  • Meat from 1 young thai coconut
  • chia gel (seeds soaked in water and kept in a mason jar in fridge) – 2 TB.

Blend in a high speed blender ( I use a Vitamix) till smooth and creamy, Pour into a large bowl and top with granola, bee pollen, dried superfruit.  I believe one of the KEYS to the lasting duration of this smoothie is the granola combined with the thick, density of the smoothie (nutrition and ingredients).  I make my own granola (recipe coming real soon, I promise!) and love the crunchy texture in my mouth with the sweet, creamy consistency of the smoothie soup.  If you need more sweetness, add a few dates or a few drops of stevia.

NOW, if you don’t have access to:

  1. coconuts -  just use an avocado for the thick, creamy consistency or use some full-fat organic coconut milk in place of the water/ coconut meat.
  2. Dried figs – substitute what you like:  dried plums, dried apricots, dried prunes, Thompson raisins, dates (pitted), etc. – Make sure dried fruit is UNSULPHERED and ORGANIC.
  3. Kale – use collards, spinach (use LOTS being that it is a thinner green), swiss chard
  4. chia seeds – use flax seeds (they might “nutty” up the flavor so use less) to taste
  5. Toppings: use fresh banana slices, fresh fruit, or frozen fruit, cacao nibs, whatever you like.

Some days, I will add spirulina, Ormus Greens or the like for extra OOMMPH! to it.

Photobucket

Pull out your spoon and ladle this delicious and nutritious meal into your mouth and be prepared to JAM for hours.   I still love my acai bowls, but this little gem has taken a front seat in my opinion.

Photobucket

Hope you get to try it out and maybe come up with your own concoction.  What food do you like for energy and endurance?

Raw SUPERFOOD Double Chocolate Fudge Brownie – THE BEST EVER!

Raw SUPERFOOD Double Chocolate Fudge Brownie – THE BEST EVER!

Superfood Double Chocolate Fudge Brownie

Photobucket

When I first saw the recipe here, I thought “Yeah, another raw chocolate brownie.  I’ve made dozens of those.”  However, the DOUBLE CHOCOLATE FUDGE part enticed me to the DARK (chocolate) side and I had to try it.  I had all the ingredients and went to work “playing” (it isn’t working when creating delicious food in the kitchen to me).   I used a few different ingredients than what the original recipe called for. I used maple syrup instead of agave.  I used  NuNaturals stevia instead of the dates.  I could have used ground almonds, but I had some dehydrated hazelnut pulp (flour) from making hazelnut milk a few weeks ago and knew it would blend nicely with the chocolate flavor.   From my old baking days, hazelnuts and chocolate are complimentary partners!  So, in went the hazelnut flour.

When I had the dough mixed, I tasted to make sure the flavors were right.  Holy FREAKING moly!  THIS WAS THE BEST RAW BROWNIE I had EVER had!  REALLY!  This is just my own personal opinion.  I have made a bunch of different recipes of raw brownies and tasted other peoples versions and this one SHINES with chocolatey and nutty delight!  I was so excited!  I said to Scott “You’ve GOT to try this!”  He is always so willing and obliging to try anything I create.   He took a bite and his eyes opened wide and he mumbled “HHUUUUMMM!!! This is FANTASTIC!”  I know!!!

If you don’t have all the ingredients, go ahead and make it anyways.  I don’t think it will take away from the overall tastiness.  I’ve never put tahini in a brownie recipe before and I loved the nuttiness from it.  All the ingredients just played beautifully together in this mix.  So, are you ready for this recipe?  * Sorry about some of the pictures – I took them at night and not the best lighting.*

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup desiccated or macaroon coconut flakes
  • 1 cup of almonds, ground ( I used hazelnut flour “dehydrated pulp”-ground)
  • ½ cup Tahini or raw almond butter
  • ¼ cup Lucuma powder
  • ¼ Maca Powder
  • ½ cup raw cacao powder
  • 6 drops of NuNaturals stevia or 1 cup chopped dates
  • ½ cup Grade B Maple Syrup
  • 3 scoops vanilla Sunwarrior protein powder
  • 1-2 HEAPING TB. raw honey
  • ¼ cup boiling water
  • ¼ cup raw cacao nibs
  • Tiny pinch of salt
    1. Combine all the ingredients in a food processor, except for the cacao nibs.
    2. Process until well combined into a dough – slightly sticky.  You want to be able to put some in your hand, squeeze and have it hold form.  At this point, I dumped the dough into a bowl and added the cacao nibs and mixed in by hand.  I like playing with my food when I can.  I can give it love this way when I am fondling it.  Just saying! :)

  1. After nibs are good and mixed in, either roll into balls, form in a brownie tray, into a mini muffin pan or large heart shaped form.  Whichever shakes your fancy!
